Four expeditioners look towards a giant woman, the Paintress, in the distance

We Continue

Yesterday I completed the phenomenal Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. It’s a spectacular game with a truly mature and philosophical exploration of grief, community, love, and perseverance. I loved everything about it and it’s very likely to be my Game of the Year for 2025. Upon reaching the end, I was inspired to write a poem to capture the essence of what I took away from the incredible journey the team at Sandfall Interactive took me on. I hope you enjoy it.

We Continue – A Poem for Expedition 33

When one falls
We continue

Painting in combat
Painting the bars of our own prison
Painting the stories we tell

Erasing the dark
Erasing the light
Erasing the world

We fight for those who come after
In the endless cycle of life
Hoping for light for their night

And we lose
And we grieve
A life to love
A life to paint

Life forces cruel choices
In creation
In destruction

We question what is real?
We question what is painted?
We question what is right?
We question if there is a right?

Fragments tell stories
When the dust settles
And our drafts collide
For the children of Lumière

And so
Tomorrow comes
We continue
What will you paint?
